‘Five things about the lake’, Flora de Falbe

1. The lake is no slave to fashion, but she is proud of her frothy skirt of trees. Her dark, svelte figure.
2. She doesn’t want to talk. The air rushes over her, whistling how have you been? – and she responds with a glassy stare.
3. The lake raises an eyebrow when she is speckled with rain. She doesn’t do anything else but the rain takes the hint.
4. When the lake picks out her foliage she does so with impeccable taste. Even the fallen leaves have agreed on a colour scheme.
5. The lake enjoys being looked at (though she wouldn’t admit it). She likes that I’m writing this.

  1. Flora de Falbe uses cardinal numbers to create a list type effect. This emphasises all the lake's different qualities as a living person and 'her' characteristics as a proud lady ("the lake enjoys being looked at").
She also uses personification to turn normal features of a lake into a personality ("she is proud of her frothy skirt"+ "she responds with a glassy stare"). This allows the lake to become a complex living being intstead of a plain inanimate object.

  2. I like how the personification is used in this passage as it gives the lake human like qualities and links between man and nature. It uses personal pronouns like 'she' and 'her' (though she wouldn't admit it)The list quality makes it emphasise how many qualities the lake has. It has a lovely way of expressing how alive the lake is and i like how short the poem is as it makes it concise and organised.

  3. I like it how she likens the lake to a woman and her interesting use of personification gives the lake a sense of character that we would probably not recognise in general. I also like the way that women might be able to relate to this poem and it creates a connection between man and nature . Flora de Falbe also gives attributes to the lake that makes her look like a role model . "The lake is no slave to fashion" unlike many women to today who worry constantly about their self-image , the lake embraces herself and she is proud.
